MUKA BY ASHLEIGH FATA / by In*ter*is*land Collective

M U K A

There are women on this side if the earth

Standing at the edge of woven mats

Induced with life

Ready to give birth

Rubbing muka on their thigh

Boiling water with their karakia

Ko te kawa o te ao

Standing in between the fingers of their tipuna

While the smell of harakeke burns like incense as they dig their elbows into their hip

Softening the fibres of their backbone

Sharing parts of their sacred selves with strangers

Over and under

Under and over

Pūtake

Take

T a k e

Give

Weave

W e a v e

Weave your story into existence e kō

And raranga your self back to full health
