Melanesian Marks: Revival through Practice

  • MOKU Pacific HQ 56 Artillery Lane London E1 7LS United Kingdom (map)

Melanesian Marks is a movement to revive the practice of marking our indigenous bodies as an act of reclamation, reinscribing importance on bodies that became invisible in the colonial narrative of our existence.

Curator Ema Tavola will discuss the work of tattoo practitioner, Julia Mage’au Gray in the context of shared experiences of research and the place of research in reviving the practice of wearing Melanesian marks. What are the dynamics of revival when cultural memory has been diminished by colonisation and accounts of the practice are translated through the positionality of academics and outsiders?

Hear stories of the transformative nature of Melanesian female tattoo practice and its impacts for the wearers and their communities.
